GOP Unveils Plan to Reduce Costs, Expand Access to Affordable Health Care

At a press conference today, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and GOP lawmakers unveiled a new plan to reduce health care costs and expand Americans' access to affordable care.

The GOP plan will "reduce costs, expand access, and increase the quality of care in a way that Americans can afford." Instead of a "government takeover of health care," Republicans have laid out a health care solution that "keeps patients and doctors in charge of key medical decisions." Some of the highlights of the plan include:

  • Making quality health care coverage affordable and accessible for every American, regardless of pre-existing health conditions.
  • Protecting Americans from being forced into a new government-run health care plan that would eliminate the health care coverage more than 100 million Americans currently receive through their job.
  • Letting Americans who like their health care coverage keep it, and giving all Americans the freedom to choose the plan that best meets their needs.
  • Ensuring that medical decisions are made by patients and their doctors, not government bureaucrats.
  • Improving Americans' lives through effective prevention, wellness, and disease management programs, while developing new treatments and cures for life-threatening diseases.

The plan was developed by the House Republican Health Care Reform Solutions Group, led by Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) – one of several groups set up by Boehner to craft new solutions to the challenges facing America.

Boehner appeared on Good Morning America today and said Republicans "want to work with the President to make sure that all Americans have access to high quality, affordable health insurance." But in an op-ed for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Boehner says the proposal currently supported by leading Democrats includes "new mandates" that will lead to higher costs and fewer jobs:

"At the heart of the Democrats' plan are new mandates that will place a heavier burden than ever on families, small businesses and employers. Not only does that mean higher costs for you, but that means higher costs for your employer, too. And that equals far fewer jobs."
