Today marks the second anniversary since Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised a "commonsense plan" to lower gas prices. Please find below a memo from Republican Leader John Boehner calling on GOP challengers to hold Democrat incumbents accountable for their failures to reveal this plan and address rising gas prices.

MEMO

TO: GOP Candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives
FROM: Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH)
RE: The "Pelosi Premium"
DATE: April 24, 2008

Voters in your districts are now paying an average of $1.23 more for gasoline than they were at the start of the Democratic Majority. In many places, a gallon of gas is nearly $4. You could call it the "Pelosi Premium."

On April 24, 2006, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) first promised to implement "a commonsense plan" to address skyrocketing gas prices. But this plan has yet to materialize and gas costs more than ever. House Republicans tried forcing the Majority to reveal their plan yesterday, but 222 Democrats balked, voting against a measure that would have forced Pelosi to reveal her "commonsense plan" to lower gas prices. Only two House Democrats broke ranks and distanced themselves from their leadership’s gas price deception by voting with Republicans.

I invite you to join me in marking two years of broken promises by calling on your opponents to finally reveal the "commonsense plan" they promised. It is irresponsible and dishonest for Democrats to promise a "commonsense plan" to bring down gas prices and not deliver. Call them on it. Make sure voters know:

  • Democrats won’t address the core issue: we need MORE AMERICAN ENERGY. Instead, they’ve voted to raise taxes on American energy companies while giving tax breaks to Hugo Chavez’s state-owned oil company. Top Democrats have even proposed raising the gas tax by 50-cents a gallon -- $10 every time you fill up!

  • Energy independence requires comprehensive bipartisan solutions. We need a comprehensive approach that reduces our dependence on foreign sources of energy, lowers energy prices here at home, and invests in all forms of energy to create American jobs and grow our economy. Democrats fought those efforts when we were in the majority and now we’re paying the price.
So long as meaningful energy bills gather dust in congressional committees, bottled up by chairmen who owe their positions to Pelosi and the radical liberal groups bankrolling Democrats' 2008 campaigns, American families and small businesses will continue to suffer. Let’s make sure Democrats are held accountable.
