Boehner Calls Biden's Claim That Tax Hikes Are Patriotic "Laughable" | "You Don't Get Any More Status Quo Than Pushing for Higher Taxes"

WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today responded to remarks by Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) who called paying higher taxes "patriotic":
    "Every hard-working American whose career isn't built on taxing and spending will find Joe Biden's claim that tax hikes are 'patriotic' laughable.

    "Taxpayers have given enough to Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Both are serial earmarkers, quietly siphoning off millions of tax dollars for their pet projects while opposing real reforms. And taxpayers were forced to bail out the same failed companies that have fueled the Obama-Biden ticket with money and advice.

    "Wrapping a massive tax hike in the American flag isn't going to help families and small businesses struggling with high fuel costs. And it does nothing for the homeowners and taxpayers who paid for Barack Obama's top economic advisors' 'golden parachutes.' The fact is, there's nothing patriotic about forking over more money to bureaucrats and politicians to waste.

    "Washington needs real reform and it needs real leaders like John McCain and Sarah Palin who are willing to be bold and shake up the status quo. And you don't get any more status quo than pushing for higher taxes."

NOTE: AP reported this morning that Biden called paying more in taxes "the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans." From ABC's Good Morning America:
    JOE BIDEN: We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people.
    ABC'S KATE SNOW: Anybody making over $250,000…
    BIDEN: Is gonna pay more.
    SNOW: Is going to pay more.
    BIDEN: You got it. It's time to be patriotic, Kate. Time to jump in. Time to be part of the deal. Time to help get America out of the rut.
