WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today hailed Senator John McCain's (R-AZ) call for Democratic leaders to return to Washington and allow Congress to vote on "All of the Above" energy reforms. Boehner released the following statement:
"John McCain has called on Congress to return to Washington and hold a vote on ‘All of the Above' energy reforms to help lower gas prices. Will Barack Obama do the same?

"While Democrats left town for a month-long break, House Republicans have stayed behind and continued to demand a vote on the American Energy Act, which will help lower energy prices and liberate America from its dependence on foreign oil. Our bill will increase new energy production, improve conservation and efficiency, and promote the research and development of alternative fuels.

"Our bill also calls for eliminating barriers to the expansion of emission-free nuclear power production, which McCain highlighted today in Michigan. The only people standing in the way of reform are Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid.

"Congress doesn't deserve a break -- not while families and small businesses are struggling under the weight of sky-high fuel costs. It's time for Barack Obama to put away the tire gauge and tell his Democratic leaders to return to Washington – today – to hold a vote on the American Energy Act."

NOTE: While touring a nuclear power plant in Michigan today, McCain said:
"Solving our national energy crisis requires an ‘all of the above' approach. That will require aggressive development of alternative energies like wind, solar, tidal and bio-fuels. It also requires expanding traditional sources of energy like off shore drilling, clean coal, and nuclear power like the power produced at this plant here in Michigan. …

"We need to do all this and more. That is why I am calling for an ‘all of the above' approach. I am also calling on Congress to come back into session to deal with this pressing energy challenge. I am prepared to take time off the campaign trail and I hope Senator Obama is too."
